Poker hand rankings: from high card to royal flush

What beats what at showdown — the shared scoreboard every Hold’em player needs cold. No locks, no superstition.

Learning outcomes

  • List standard five-card poker hand categories from weakest to strongest.
  • Explain how kickers and suits work in common tie situations.
  • Use a rankings chart without superstition (“suited always wins,” etc.).

Why rankings come early

Texas Hold’em awards the pot to the best five-card hand at showdown (or to the last player when everyone else folds). Your two hole cards combine with five community cards; you may use zero, one, or both hole cards. The ranking below is the shared language of the table.

Humility: A strong hand category does not “guarantee” you win the hand before all cards are out — and it never guarantees long-run profit. Rankings settle showdowns; variance still exists.

The ranking chart (strongest → weakest)

RankHandExamplePlain-English
1Royal flushA♠ K♠ Q♠ J♠ T♠Ace-high straight flush — top of the chart
2Straight flush9♥ 8♥ 7♥ 6♥ 5♥Five in a row, same suit
3Four of a kindK♣ K♦ K♥ K♠ 2♦Four cards of one rank
4Full houseQ♠ Q♥ Q♦ 7♣ 7♠Three of one rank + a pair
5FlushA♦ J♦ 8♦ 4♦ 2♦Five same suit, not in sequence
6Straight10♣ 9♦ 8♠ 7♥ 6♣Five in a row, mixed suits
7Three of a kind8♠ 8♥ 8♦ K♣ 3♠Three of one rank
8Two pairA♠ A♦ 5♣ 5♥ 9♦Two different pairs
9One pairJ♥ J♠ A♣ 8♦ 3♠Two of one rank
10High cardA♠ Q♦ 9♣ 6♥ 2♠Nothing paired; highest card(s) decide

Suitedness note: Suits are equal for ranking purposes — hearts do not beat spades. Suits only matter for making flushes / straight flushes — not for “red beats black.”

Tie-breakers you’ll actually use

  • Two pair vs two pair: Higher pair wins; if equal, compare the second pair; if still equal, compare the kicker.
  • Flush vs flush: Compare highest card, then next, and so on.
  • Straight vs straight: Higher top card wins (A-high “Broadway” beats K-high; wheel A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest straight).
  • Full house vs full house: Compare the three-of-a-kind first, then the pair.

A kicker is a side card that breaks ties when the primary made hand is equal — classic example: both players have a pair of aces; the higher side card wins.

Beginner traps (Bankrate honesty)

  • “Any suited hand is strong” — suited adds flush potential; many suited hands are still weak.
  • “Ace-high always wins” — ace-high is only high card; pairs beat it.
  • “I have a pair on the board so I’m safe” — everyone shares the board; kickers and hidden pairs matter.
  • “Four to a straight means I have a straight” — four cards is a draw, not a made straight.

Mini example (showdown literacy)

Board: K♠ 9♦ 9♣ 4♥ 2♠
Player A: K♦ Q♣ → two pair, kings and nines, queen kicker
Player B: K♣ 8♠ → two pair, kings and nines, eight kicker

Result: Player A wins — same two pair, better kicker. No tipster theater required.

Key takeaway

Rankings settle showdowns; they never guarantee long-run profit. Suits are equal except for making flushes — hearts do not beat spades.
