Learning outcomes
- Explain high + qualifying low split at a high level (commonly eight-or-better).
- Recognize that not every board makes a low.
- Keep SoftCta/partner talk separate from always-scoop myths.
What it is
Omaha Hi-Lo (often PLO8 / eight-or-better) uses the same four hole cards and exactly two hole + exactly three board construction as Omaha high. The pot commonly splits between:
- the best high hand, and
- a qualifying low — typically five unpaired cards eight or lower, ranked A-to-5 (wheel A-2-3-4-5 is the nut low).
If no low qualifies, the high hand often takes the whole pot (house rules apply — read the table).
How it differs from Hold’em
Hold’em has one showdown scoreboard. Hi-Lo adds scoops (winning both halves), quartered pots (tying one half), and counterfeited lows. Same ranking categories still apply to the high half.
Who it’s for
Intermediate Formats learners after Omaha high literacy. Not a beginner entry point; not MVP practice-table scope.
Key terms
Eight-or-better · scoop · quartered · wheel (A-2-3-4-5) · nut low · counterfeit low.

Key takeaway
Not every board qualifies a low. Scoop and quartered are vocabulary — never SoftCta FOMO. Hold’em practice stays Hold’em-first.
FAQ
- Does every Omaha Hi-Lo board make a low?
- No. If a qualifying low cannot be made, the high side often scoops by default (confirm house rules).
- Is the low half the same ranking chart as high?
- Lows use separate eight-or-better / A-to-5 logic — do not treat a pair of aces as a strong low.
- Can I practice Hi-Lo on ChanceWire now?
- Not as a dedicated table in MVP. Hold’em practice first; Formats later.
