Crypto prediction venues often settle or collateralize in stablecoins. Interfaces may display dollar signs for readability. That shorthand is not a sure-thing claim that the token will always convert one-for-one into USD cash on your schedule. Depeg risk — the settlement asset trading away from its reference — is a separate layer from whether an event resolves Yes or No. This guide is literacy, not pick-selling.

Two risk layers readers mix up
- Event risk — Did the contract’s criteria resolve in your favor?
- Settlement-asset risk — What is the conversion value and operational path of the token or balance you hold?
You can “win” the event and still face friction if the stablecoin is dislocated, redeemability is constrained, or exit rails are slow. ChanceWire never invents live peg prints — verify live secondary prices and issuer notices.
How depegs show up operationally
Qualitative scenarios (not predictions):
- Spot markets print the stablecoin below (or above) $1 while your venue still shows contract prices in “cents.”
- Redemptions to fiat pause or queue while secondary liquidity remains thin.
- Bridging or transferring to an exit venue adds fees and delay — fees, spreads, and effective odds.
None of these replace reading resolution rules — resolution criteria checklist.
USD event contracts vs stablecoin books
Some regulated products settle in USD inside hosted accounts. That removes one stablecoin mark-to-market surface and replaces it with banking-rail and operator operational risk. Product shape differs across platforms; do not assume Polymarket-style USDC flows match Kalshi-style USD accounting — orientation only in polymarket vs kalshi.
What literacy is not
- It is not a call to abandon stablecoins or to chase any particular issuer.
- It is not a claim that any named token will depeg on a date.
- It is not location-spoofing advice for accessing venues — how geo gates work.
SoftCta posture
ChanceWire does not execute trades and does not custody stablecoins. Soft CTAs stay learn-more / verify-on-operator after age and geo checks. Browse event odds on markets; confirm settlement asset details on the operator. Compare venue posture on compare.
Reader checklist
- Identify the settlement or collateral asset on the venue.
- Separate event PnL from settlement-asset conversion risk.
- Know your exit path (redeem, sell, withdraw) before stress hits.
- Re-read issuer and venue notices during market stress — do not rely on memory.
- Treat dollar signs in UIs as display conventions until verified.

FAQ
- What is a stablecoin depeg in this context?
- A depeg is when a stablecoin trades meaningfully away from its intended reference (often one US dollar) on secondary markets. Venue balances denominated in that token can then buy fewer dollars than the UI’s “$” shorthand suggests.
- Does a Yes contract at 60¢ protect me from stablecoin risk?
- No. Event-contract odds and settlement-asset value are different risk layers. You can be correct on the event and still face conversion or mark-to-market issues in the settlement token.
- Does ChanceWire promise stablecoin stability?
- No. ChanceWire is comparison media and does not custody assets. We never invent peg status — verify live market prices and issuer disclosures.
