DeFi total value locked (TVL) milestone markets

Total value locked is the most quoted health metric in decentralised finance. Event contracts may ask whether DeFi TVL will pass a dollar milestone, whether one chain will overtake another, or whether a protocol will reach a threshold by a date. The number looks simple, but it depends on prices, definitions and one dominant data source. This SoftCta guide explains what to check.

What TVL measures

TVL is the dollar value of crypto assets held in DeFi smart contracts: lending pools, decentralised exchange liquidity, staking and restaking contracts, and similar protocols. Aggregators read balances from on-chain contracts and multiply them by token prices. The result is a snapshot of how much value is committed to DeFi at a moment in time.

The aggregator question

DefiLlama is the most widely cited source, and most TVL contracts name it. Its headline figure depends on toggles. By default, some categories are excluded, such as staking of a chain's native token, borrowed amounts and certain double-counted positions. Turning those on can change the total substantially. A contract should name the page and the settings, or state that it uses the default view at a given time.

Aggregators also update methodology, add or remove protocols and fix errors. A protocol can be delisted after an exploit or reclassified into a different category. Our guide on amendment and rule change notices explains how to handle changes after a market opens.

Price versus flows

Because TVL is in dollars, it moves with token prices. A 20% rise in ether can lift DeFi TVL sharply with no change in user activity. Some readers track TVL in native token terms to separate price effects from flows. This is similar to the distinction between nominal and real figures; see our nominal versus real guide. For milestone markets, the price of the main assets often matters more than adoption.

Double counting

Liquid staking tokens, wrapped assets and receipt tokens can be placed in other protocols, so the same underlying value appears in more than one place. Aggregators try to strip this out in default views, but rules change and edge cases remain. Stablecoins are counted too; our stablecoin supply guide explains how stablecoin totals differ from TVL.

Chain and protocol rankings

Markets on whether one chain passes another depend on how bridged assets are attributed and whether native staking is included. Protocol rankings can shift after incentive programmes start or end, since rewards attract assets that may leave later.

Wording checks

  • Source and view: the exact aggregator page and settings.
  • Snapshot time: daily close, a specific hour or any intraday reading; see our time zone guide.
  • Scope: all DeFi, one chain or one protocol.
  • Methodology changes: whether later revisions count.

A reading habit

Check the current TVL with the named settings, the recent move in major token prices and any announced methodology changes before reacting to a quote. Convert prices with the implied probability tool and verify live prices on the venue.

Primary sources SoftCta readers open

  • DefiLlama TVL dashboards and methodology notes
  • Protocol documentation and on-chain contract data
  • Block explorers for chain-level verification
  • Aggregator changelogs for methodology updates

Reading the quote step by step

  • Read the full title and rules, including the named settlement source and the time zone.
  • Convert the Yes and No prices to implied probabilities and note the gap between them.
  • Subtract fees and spread to see the effective price you would actually face.
  • Write your own probability range and the evidence behind it, then compare.
  • Check related and near-duplicate markets on other venues for consistency.

Closing SoftCta checklist

  • Re-read the venue definition in your own words before reacting to a price.
  • Convert prices with fee and spread awareness; verify live cents on the operator.
  • Prefer primary settlement sources over secondary headlines and social summaries.
  • Treat ChanceWire hubs, movers, and tools as orientation — not order entry.
  • Confirm age, location, and product eligibility; SoftCta pages will not suggest location spoofing.
  • If clarity is incomplete, watching is a complete SoftCta outcome — no pick-selling urgency required.

SoftCta habits

  • Write your own probability range before checking the crowd price.
  • Prefer dated primary sources over social summaries.
  • Compare related markets when a single book looks extreme.
  • Size curiosity with fees and depth in mind; substantial risk of loss.

FAQ

What is total value locked?
Total value locked, or TVL, is the US dollar value of crypto assets held in decentralised finance protocols, such as lending markets, exchanges and staking contracts, as tracked by a data aggregator.
Which source is usually used for TVL markets?
DefiLlama is the most widely cited aggregator. Contracts should name the exact page, chain or protocol, and any default settings, because the headline number depends on inclusion choices.
Why can TVL rise without new money entering?
TVL is measured in dollars. If the price of ether or other tokens rises, the dollar value of assets already in protocols rises too, even if no one adds new assets.
What is double counting in TVL?
When a token received from one protocol, such as a liquid staking token, is placed in another protocol, the same underlying value can appear twice. Aggregators offer settings to include or exclude these overlaps.
